Traditional measurement methods and tools are not always suitable for checking tapered bearings in precision applications or measuring the inner or outer envelope diameter of a cylindrical roller bearing set. Therefore, SKF has developed a range of specialized gauges designed to take the necessary precise measurements when mounting tapered hole cylindrical roller bearings. These gauges are also useful for applications outside of precision contexts.

The GRA 30 series ring gauges and DMB taper gauges can be used to check the most common tapered bearings. A GRA ring gauge can only be used to check a tapered bearing for a specific bearing size. However, DMB taper gauges can be used for various diameters as well as for tapers other than 1:12.

To precisely adjust the radial internal clearance or preload when mounting a tapered hole cylindrical roller bearing, it is essential to accurately measure the inner or outer envelope diameter of the roller set(s). SKF internal clearance measuring devices from the GB 30 and GB 10 series and the GB 49 series provide simple and accurate measurement solutions.
